What is Impact Investing?

Impact investments are made with intention to directly influence social and environmental causes while still accumulating wealth through investment returns. While Impact strategies will likely consider ESG factors, impact investing is separate in that it is a strategy of investing in enterprises, organizations and funds with the dual goals of achieving financial returns and positive social and/or environmental impact.

Investors who seek financial gains and impact refer to this as the “double bottom line”, mimicking an accounting term to express how both aspects need to be measured and reported.

The growing impact investment market provides capital to address significant global challenges in sectors such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, conservation, microfinance, and affordable and accessible basic services including housing, healthcare, and education.

How does Pharos define Impact?

Pharos seeks to generate impact by investing in growing healthcare companies that lower costs, improve outcomes and expand access to care, especially in underserved regions. These three objectives are commonly referred to among healthcare professionals as the “Triple Aim”, a framework developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in 2007. Pharos aims to reduce inequalities in underserved segments of the United States healthcare system, most notably in rural and urban communities.

What are some examples of communities that Pharos targets for investment?

  • Rural Communities
  • Urban and Inner-City Communities
  • Low-to-Moderate Income Areas
  • Underserved Populations (Minority, Female, Veteran)
  • Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs)
  • Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs)

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action. These SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. Through its investment activities, Pharos works to address at least four of these goals:
